TEENS IN TRANSITION
The SpringBrook Adolescent Life Skills Program accepts teens who have shown greater ability to limit destructive behaviors as a result of their experience at the SpringBrook Adolescent Program. They require the intensive supervision of a psychiatric residential treatment facility coupled with emphasis on individual, group, family therapy and life skills development. Less emphasis is placed on behavioral interventions while greater emphasis is placed on coping skills, problem solving, and the development of assets to be successful in community living.
AN OPPORTUNIY FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Since teens place a great deal of trust and creditability in their peers, the interaction and encouragement of others their age becomes a critical part of treatment. Group therapy, planned activities, community outings, and work projects give the Life Skills group a chance to share insights and help one another through the emotionally difficult times. The evening's meals in the Life Skills kitchen is a time to share thoughts and work together to prepare, serve, and clean up after dinner.
Working with SpringBrook support staff in administration, dietary services, maintenance, housekeeping, the school, etc. provides the Life Skills teen an opportunity to interact with mentors in a real life work situation. Working closely with the family (when available) and with outside agencies and public schools, the Life Skills staff set the stage for support and encouragement toward successful community living. Beyond the therapeutic experience of the Life Skills Program, teens learn money management, self-care and care of property, etiquette, appropriate use of leisure time, use of community resources and accountability for one's self and others. The opportunity to make decisions, to succeed and to fail is put in perspective in the Life Skills Program. Teens are encouraged to define their goals and determine self-fulfilling directions in their lives. The program enhances the teen's ability to solve problems and make better decisions by providing the tools needed to cope in a fast paced, complex society that requires self-discipline productivity.
SUPPORTING THE GAINS MADE AT SPRINGBROOK
The lessons learned at SpringBrook provide a solid basis for continued growth and success. It is important, however, to plan the transition from SpringBrook to the child's community living environment. Aftercare planning begins when treatment begins. SpringBrook professionals work with families, the local school, youth serving agencies, and other health and mental health professionals to facilitate a successful return to the community.
